The medieval Thetford Priory is set to be transformed into an amazing theatrical backdrop this summer, as Breckland Council has organised for two exciting open-air theatre performances to take place in the district.

Chapterhouse Theatre Company will be performing a new production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet on 31 August, followed by family favourite pantomime, Cinderella the following day (1 September). The shows have recently been touring across Ireland and the UK to much acclaim.

Cllr Paul Claussen, Executive Member for Economic Development and Growth at Breckland Council commented: “We’re thrilled to be bringing these fantastic performances to Thetford and to be making the most of the wonderful Thetford Priory, thanks to the support of English Heritage which owns the site. This event is just the latest way that Breckland Council is supporting our district to thrive and will give yet another opportunity for residents and visitors to get out and about in our fine district.”

Romeo and Juliet is a classic story packed with feuding families and two star-crossed lovers trying to find happiness is sure to be a highlight for the open-air theatre season. Meanwhile, Cinderella will take attendees on a magical journey to a far-away enchanted kingdom, featuring silly songs, panto puns and pumpkin carriages, where nearly anything is possible especially if it’s before midnight. Children and visitors of all ages are invited to dress in their favourite fairy tale characters and join the midsummer ball dance!

Breckland Council are using these events to pilot the place branding ambitions set out in the Hemingway Design work conducted last year. The events will celebrate Thetford’s rich heritage, the river, and our active community, as part of a programme of summer activity. Breckland Council has subsidised the cost of the performances at the Priory and are working closely with local partners to offer several free events to be confirmed soon.
