Almost 30 neighbourhood, charity and community organisations in Breckland have been awarded funding by Breckland Council as part of a special Queen’s Jubilee Grants programme.
This year, the country is coming together for a year-long Platinum Jubilee celebration of The Queen’s seventy years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952. An extended bank holiday from June 2-5 will provide an opportunity for communities to come together to celebrate this historic milestone.
To support local celebrations, Breckland Council created a grants Programme with up to £500 per application to help local groups to run events that celebrate and mark the Platinum Jubilee in the district. The range of local events will enable communities to take part in celebrations within their communities that are easily accessible and free to attend. The events that will share the total of £12,700 grant funding include parties, picnics, sports days, fetes, quizzes, and community barbeques.

Breckland Council is delivering a wide range of projects to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, including planting over 700 trees as part of the Queen’s Canopy project, a Jubilee trail in Breckland market towns and a £1000 bursary for Breckland students who need support taking their next educational step. Lyng and District Community Hall
Community Picnic: open to all, with food vendors, activities for children, Jubilee themed prizes, music and other outdoor activities.

Bradenham Village Hall
Village Fete and Sports Day: open to all, with traditional stalls, activities and food. There will also be a vintage transport show, and the grand unveiling of the three Jubilee trees.

North Pickenham Community
Family Fete Day: held by community volunteers, with bouncy castles, afternoon tea, themed clothing competition, classic car show and disco, and locally sourced produce.

Thetford and District Dementia Support Group
Activity Day: to be held at the local church, with the coronation shown via a projector, a singer and a band will be playing, with a full buffet on offer and activities for all. Open to anyone in the Thetford and surrounding area living with dementia, as well as their families and carers.

Weeting Bowls Club
Various: a Royal Family quiz night to be held on June 2nd, an old-fashioned sing-along with vocalist on June 3rd, London night on the evening of June 4th, with optional fancy dress, and a bowls “roll-up” on June 4th in the afternoon. Throughout, traditional food will be provided, and the event is open to all ages.

St Andrews Church, Kilverstone
Community Picnic: two trees have already been purchased and will be dedicated during a short ceremony, with a picnic to follow. Refreshments including tea/coffee and cake will be provided by the church.

Afternoon Tea: a BYO afternoon tea, but with cake and drinks provided. Jubilee bonnet and table decoration competitions will be held, with a raffle and Queen themed selfies.

Jubilee Afternoon: traditional village activities with a BYO picnic. Local school children will be putting on a performance, all activities will be free with things to do for both adults and children, bouncy castles will be available and there will be a magician and Punch and Judy show, too.

BBQ Lunch: BBQ lunch for all villagers, with live music from local villagers. Locally sourced food and drink.

Party in the Park: two live bands will be playing, a children’s entertainer will be there, and there will be hot food stalls alongside ice cream and cake stalls. A specially formed choir will be performing in time for the beacon lighting.
